Lunar New Year’s Day is the most important event each year for Koreans.
In Korea, there are two different New Year’s days, Solar New Year and Lunar New Year. The difference is how the dates calculated on the solar and lunar calendars. There is, however, a hidden history about the celebration of Lunar New Year’s day in Korea. In the past, Koreans used the lunar calendar to count time and dates, but this was changed to the solar calendar by the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period. From then, only the 1st of January was known as New Year’s Day. And also, as Luna New Year’s was a part of Korean tradition they changed the name and banned Koreans from celebrating the event.
This is the history of Lunar New Year’s day. This holiday is the biggest and the most important day for the Korean people to gather with their families, share traditional Korean food, plays traditional games, and gives thanks to their family.

우리 한국인의 최대 명절 중 하나인 설 !! 설날은 한국인의 최대 축제라고 볼 수 있어요.
한국에는 설날이 신정과 구정으로 나뉘어져 있어요. 신정과 구정의 차이는 양력과 음력의 차이라고 하지만, 다른 면에서는 많은 역사적 사건이 숨겨져 있어요. 옛날에는 한국사람들의 전통적인 시간관념 아래 새해는 음력에 근거하여 시작되었어요. 하지만, 일제시대 때 일본에 의해서 양력 설이 들어오게 되었어요. 일제는 자신들의 시간 체계에 맞는 양력설을 새로운 의미에서 신정이라 부르고 식민지인 한국인들이 보내던 음력설은 오래되어 폐지되어야 한다는 의미에서 ‘구정’ 이라고 불렸다고 해요.
