Day 11 – Lotte World Aquarium
On Monday, we visited Lotte World Aquarium which is located on the basement floor of the Lotte World in Jamsil. Our junior students got to enjoy the exhibits and see for themselves the various marine lives and ocean creatures, including Beluga whales.
잠실에 위치한 롯데월드몰의 지하1층에 커다란 아쿠아리움에 갔습니다. 아쿠아리움에는 한국의 강에서 볼 수 있는 물고기들 외에도 아마존 강에서 서식하는 동물들과 바다에 사는 동물들, 그리고 남극에 사는 동물들을 볼 수 있습니다. 그 중 가장 큰 인기는 ‘벨루가’라는 고래인데요, 저희 주니어 학생들도 그 커다랗고 하얀 고래의 모습에 한눈에 반하고 말았습니다.
Day 12 – Bongeunsa Temple
The following day we went for a guided tour around the Bongeunsa Temple which took approximately one and a half hour. Fortunately for us, it is the lotus season now at Bongeunsa Temple so we got to see lots of beautiful lotus. In addition to that, with the ongoing Lotus Festival, lots of lanterns filled the temple.
봉은사에서 자원봉사로 사찰투어를 가이드 해주시는 분과 함께 한 시간 반 가량 사찰 투어를 받았습니다. 봉은사는 지금 연꽃축제가 한창이어서 들어서는 입구부터 사람 키보다도 커다란 연꽃들을 만날 수가 있었습니다. 또한 일년 중 가장 커다란 축제 중 하나인 연등제도 코앞으로 다가와서, 사찰 안에 가득 연등을 달아놓은 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다.
Day 13 – Dongdaemun Market & DDP
On Wednesday we visited one of the four gates of Seoul – Dongdaemun – that is known as the wholesale clothing town. The Dongdaemun Market has a few large shopping centers and the items on sale are often cheaper at wholesale prices. Our junior students bought a few items as souvenirs for their family and friends back home. As it was very warm and humid that afternoon, we made a pit stop at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) to shade ourselves from the heat. Together we had some patbingsu (ice flakes) and sikhye (which is a Korean traditional rice beverage) to beat the summer heat.
서울의 4대문 중 하나인 동대문(흥인지문) 근처에는 커다란 쇼핑센터들과 더불어 각종 도매시장이 자리하고 있습니다. 우리는 그 중에 한 쇼핑센터에 들어가서 각자 필요한 물건들을 구매하고, 또한 친구들과 가족들에게 줄 기념품도 구매하였습니다. 날씨가 매우 습하고 더웠기에, 쇼핑을 마치고 우리는 DDP(동대문 디자인 플라자) 안에 있는 빙수 가게에 가서 팥빙수와 식혜(한국 전통 음료)로 더위를 잊었습니다.
Day 14 – Olympic Park
As all of you might know, South Korea hosted the Olympics in 1988. Following the Olympics event, the stadium and spacious grassy fields area surround the sports arena have now become a place for Seoul citizens to relax and unwind. However with the weather being too warm, we could not bare to let our students walk in the heat, so instead we hired a four wheeled bicycle to get around the park.
1988년 올림픽 개최 후 올림픽 때 사용했던 경기장을 중심으로 시민들을 위한 공원이 서울 송파구에 조성이 되어 있습니다. 날씨가 너무 더웠기에 도저히 걸어다닐 수가 없어서 저희는 4륜자전거를 대여하여 올림픽공원을 구경했습니다. 몽촌 토성 역에서 바로 보이는 평화의 문이 올림픽 공원에 들어가는 문입니다. 평화의 문을 지나면 올림픽 성화가 활활 타오르고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 평화의 문 옆에서 자전거를 빌려, 우리는 한 시간동안 올림픽공원을 구경하였습니다.
Day 15 – Gyeongbokgung Palace
As it is the rainy season now in Seoul, it was pouring cats and dogs on Friday morning. Thankfully the rain stopped come the afternoon so we could proceed with our activity to visit the Gyeongbokgung Palace. As we wanted to introduce Korean culture and heritage to our students, we rented hanboks (Korean traditional attire from the Joseon era) before making our way to the royal palace. Did you know that the palaces waive admission fees for visitors wearing hanbok? It truly was an unique experience for our students to be touring the palace dressed in Korean’s beautiful traditional hanbok. 🙂
아침부터 천둥과 함께 장대비가 내렸던 금요일이었는데 다행히도 점심을 먹고 난 후부터 비가 개기 시작해서 저희가 경복궁역에 도착했을 때에는 비가 완전히 그쳤습니다. 마침 경복궁 근처에 한복을 대여할 수 있는 가게들이 많이 있어, 저희는 한복을 대여해서 경복궁에 갔습니다. 경복궁은 한국 전통 의상인 한복을 착용하면 무료 입장을 하고 있습니다. 저희는 무료 입장권을 받고, 왕의 집무실인 근정전과 왕궁 연회장으로 쓰이던 경회루를 보았습니다.
